MERCED -- Garrett Turner ran for 114 yards on just 10 carries and scored twice Saturday, but his Merced College Blue Devils lost their opener 29-22 to Chabot College of Hayward.
Turner scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, and on a 65-yard dash in the fourth period that -- with Adrian Trevino's extra point -- tied it at 22 with 7:26 remaining.
Chabot's Cory Guillory scored the game-winner, finding the end zone from a yard out with 2:27 remaining.
College Women's Soccer
SEATTLE PACIFIC 7, CSU STANISLAUS 1, at Seattle -- Adrienne Sorenson's 12-yard blast into the far corner, which made it 2-1 at the 17:57 mark of the first half, was the only goal for the Warriors (2-2). Cherie Early assisted.
Seattle Pacific (4-0) made it 3-1 at the 36:25 mark, and blanked Stanislaus 4-0 in the second half.
College Men's Soccer
MODESTO JC 2, EVERGREEN 0, at De Anza Tournament -- Kiko Morales scored twice, both on assists from Garren Montes, for the Pirates (1-1-1). MJC goalie Nick Scotland made six saves.
Modesto tied De Anza 0-0 on Friday.
"We have improved every game," said MJC assistant coach Josh Berbena.
FRESNO PACIFIC 3, CSU STANISLAUS 2 (2OT), at Fresno -- Pablo Campos scored the game-winner on a breakaway in the second overtime period after 107 minutes of action.
Alfredo Renteria (on a penalty kick) and Thomas Janz (off a free kick in traffic) got the Stanislaus goals.
Boys Soccer
LIONS LABOR DAY CLASSIC, at Big Valley Christian -- Waterford (6-0-1) captured the championship, defeating Mariposa 5-4 in a shootout after play ended in a 1-1 tie. David Alvarez made the deciding penalty kick.
Carlos Navarrete scored the Waterford goal. Waterford coach Barry Wixom said his players "really stepped up today," and said Tyler Johnson played "a great tournament."
Big Valley (3-1) defeated Ripon Christian 4-2 in the third-place game, as Kyle Johnson had two goals -- the first on a rocket from 25 yards -- and an assist.
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 5, CALAVERAS 3, at Calaveras -- Junior Alex Case and freshman Alec Vitale scored twice for Central, which got good defense from Andrew Pawek, Dominic Podesto, Brandon Renoand Justin Vosbein. It was 1-1 at the half.
Women's Volleyball
BYU HAWAII 3, CSU STANISLAUS 2, at Lai, Hawaii -- A spirited Cal State Stanislaus team got 18 kills from Debbie Vander Schaaf but fell 30-19, 30-27, 20-30, 33-35, 15-11 to No. 19-ranked BYU Hawaii at the Hawaii Invitational.
Caitlin Steffeck (13), Megan Loghry (11) and Elizabeth Cameron (10) gave the Warriors four players with kills in double figures.
Facing match point at 29-23 in Game 4, CSUS rolled off seven straight to take the lead. CSUS eventually took the set 35-33 on a Karly Van Foeken kill.
With the score 10-10 in Game 5, BYU Hawaii took the lead for good on an attack error by Stanislaus.
BYU Hawaii is known for its digging prowess, but the Warriors held their own and had 107 digs to 111 for the victors.
Megan Britton led the Warriors with 35 digs and setter Nicki Brown added 17 to go with 58 assists. Amanda Pielstick chipped in 16 digs.
Noelle Filimoeatu led the Seasiders with 22 kills and 21 digs.
After the match the Warriors traveled to Honolulu to take on Hawaii Pacific late Saturday night to conclude the trip.
