Storer among those cut by NFL squads

Fullback Byron Storer, a Central Catholic and Cal grad, was among the 21 players cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday. All NFL teams were required to trim their rosters to 53 players. Fullback Zack Crockett and safety Donovin Darius were among 20 released by the Raiders. The 49ers cut receiver Bryan Gilmore, running back Thomas Clayton and 11 others.

Cafaro, crew golden in championships

Erin Cafaro of Modesto helped the United States women's four win the gold medal race Saturday at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships in Munich, Germany. The U.S. trailed Germany through the first half of the 2,000-meter race, then powered past the Germans in the third 500 meters. The U.S. clocked 6:37.94 to win by 2.42 seconds. Germany brought home the silver, Australia the bronze. Cafaro was part of the U.S. women's four that took the bronze in last year's Worlds.

Moorad taking over NASCAR racing team

Two executives with the Arizona Diamondbacks have purchased majority interest in the NASCAR team owned by Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, The Associated Press learned Saturday night. Modesto native Jeff Moorad, the team's chief executive officer, and Tom Garfinkel, the chief operating officer, will be introduced today as the controlling owners of Hall of Fame Racing at a news conference at California Speedway, two people familiar with the deal told the AP. They requested anonymity because the formal announcement had yet to be made.

Woman, 103, denied chance to hold torch

A 103-year-old Beijing woman has had her application to be a torchbearer for next year's Summer Olympics turned down, a state newspaper reported Saturday. Cao Zuozheng had applied through her residential community to the local government office, which passes on qualified applications to a higher office. "We appreciate Cao's wish. But in reality she won't be a torchbearer due to her health condition," Li Hua, director of the Jingshan sub-district office, told the China Daily.
